The history of bird's nest harvesting in Nha Trang dates back centuries, deeply rooted in local traditions. Indigenous communities discovered the health benefits of these nests and began foraging them from the coastal cliffs and caves. Over time, the practice evolved into a sustainable industry that now supports many local families.

In 1328, Admiral Le Van Dat of the Tran Dynasty discovered the islands that were occupied by swifts among the Binh Khang region and so he was revered as the progenitor of this industry. It was not until a few hundred years later in around 1700s that another Admiral, called Le Thi Huyen Tram, recognized the economic benefits and started capitalizing on the bird's nest. Later when she passed away due to a civil war, the local citizens, out of respect, began to revere her as the Mother Goddess.

Noi Island - The Capital of Bird's Nest

Noi Island, located off the coast of Nha Trang, is renowned as the 'Capital of Bird's Nest'. This small island is home to thousands of swiftlets that produce the coveted nests. The island's unique geography and climate create an ideal environment for these birds and they often choose the treacherous cliffs and crevices for their nest's location for better protection. Unlike other birds, swiftlets secrete saliva to form a nest, which is strand-like and hardens quickly.

Visitors to Noi Island can witness the traditional methods still used to harvest bird's nests. The island’s residents have perfected the art of collecting the nests without disturbing the birds, ensuring the sustainability of this precious resource. Guided tours often include a visit to the bird's nest farms and processing centers, providing a glimpse into this fascinating industry.

Sustainable Practices in Modern Bird's Nest Harvesting

Modern bird's nest harvesting in Nha Trang has embraced sustainable practices to protect both the swiftlet population and their natural habitats. Harvesters adhere to strict guidelines, ensuring that nests are collected only after the swiftlets have vacated them. Thus, harvesting can only take place twice a year.

Innovative approaches, such as creating artificial nesting sites, have been implemented to support the swiftlet population. These man-made habitats mimic natural conditions, encouraging swiftlets to breed and nest safely. This not only boosts the supply of bird's nests but also helps maintain ecological balance.
